1658 - Cromwell and Masaniello

This rare bronze medal by Ferdinand St. Urban commemorates the remarkable coincidence of two commoners being raised to the supreme government of their respective countries (MI I 432/79). Tommaso Aniello, commonly called Masaniello, an Italian fisherman and leader of the revolt in Naples against the tax upon fruit, was assassinated in 1647. Oliver Cromwell, a farmer, and military and political leader of the Puritans during the English Civil War, was raised to Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland and Ireland, he died in 1658. The diameter is 46 mm and the condition Extremely Fine.
