1649 - Death of Charles SOLD

This rare silver medal by Thomas Rawlins commemorates the Death of Charles I on the 30th Jan 1649 (MI I 341/188). It commemorates the fortitude and consistency of the King. The reverse shows a Salamander amid flames. The Salamander was often used as an emblem of fortitude and patience under suffering. The legend on the reverse reads, 'The Consistency of the King, 30 Jan 1648'. The diameter is 42 mm and the condition almost Extremely Fine. This medal has been sold.
