1649 - Charles I Memorial

This rare silver medal by F? commemorates the execution of Charles I which took place on the 30th January 1649 (MI (i) 352/210). This contemporary medal was struck in either Germany or Holland. The obverse shows a three-quarter bust of Charles I and the legend reads CARL.I.V.G.G KONIG VON ENGELS: SCHOTT: T. UND IRRLAND. (Charles I , by the Grace of God, King of England, Scotland and Ireland) and the outer legend reads LEYDEN GOTT UND OBRIGKEIT (God and the sovereign power suffer). The reverse shows a seven-headed monster over the head of Charles; the legend reads BEY DES POFELS MACHTUND STREIT (The mob's might and strife). The diameter is 46mm and the condition better than Extremely Fine. The medal has a pleasing uniform tone.
