1674 - Louis XIV: Victories on the Rhine Sold

This large bronze medal commemorates the victories of Louis XIV on the Rhine in 1674. Louis XIV faced a coalition of Britain, Holland and Sweden but despite this the war in Europe continued with brilliant French victories against the overwhelming forces of the opposing coalition. In a matter of weeks in 1674, the Spanish territory of Franche Comté (Burgundy) fell to the French armies under the eyes of the king, while Condé defeated a much larger combined army, with Austrian, Spanish, and Dutch contingents, under the Prince of Orange, preventing them from descending on Paris. The coalition was exhausted by the war and in 1678 negotiated the Treaty of Nijmegen. The reverse of the medal shows Louis XIV being offered a tray of olive branches. The diameter is 66mm and the condition is extremely fine. This original medal is rare in this condition. The edge is bevelled and there are no mint marks. This medal has been sold.
