1857 - Exhibition of Art Treasures, Manchester SOLD

This beautiful White Metal medal by John Pinches of London commemorates the opening of an exhibition of Art Treasure in Manchester on the 5th May 1857 (BHM 2605). Inspired by the success of Paxton's building for the Great Exhibition in London in 1851, a committee was formed in Manchester to erect a Crystal Palace to house works of art. A competition was held for the design of the building and was won by C.D. Young & Co. It remains the largest art exhibition to be held in the UK, possibly in the world, with over 16,000 works on display. The obverse of the medal shows the exhibition building and the reverse three muses seated and surrounded by various objects symbolizing the subject of the exhibition. The diameter is 63 mm and the condition Mint. This medal has been sold.
