1744 - Sir Andrew Fountaine

The beautiful and very rare damascened medal by Jacques-Antoine Dassier, Geneva, commemorates the life and achievements of Sir Andrew Fountaine (MI ii 590/236). The medal was struck in 1744 whilst Jacques-Antoine Dassier was an assistant engraver at the London Mint. It is part of the Dassier's Illustrious Men series. Sir Andrew Fountain (1676 - 1753) was an antiquarian, art collector and amateur architect. He was also warden of the London Mint from 1727 to his death. The inscription on the reverse appeared on Roman coins and commemorated the three moneyers who had the superintendence of the coinage at that time. The diameter is 56 mm and the weight 83.1 gms. The medal has a minor blemish on the reverse, otherwise the condition is as struck.
