1743 - Ralph Brideoake (Original dies)

This rococo style bronze medal is one of the London series issued by Jacques-Antoine Dassier in 1743 (MI ii 572/208). It is from the original dies and as such is very rare. Archdeacon Ralph or Radulph Brideoake (1665-1743), was the Archdeacon of Winchester, Prebendary of Hereford and Rector of St. Mary’s Southampton. Ralph rebuilt the parish church and parsonage house in Southampton at his own expense. His father, Ralph Brideoake senior (1613-1678), was the Bishop of Chichester between 1675-1678, and the eldest surviving son of Richard Brideoake (Briddock) of Cheetham Hill, Manchester, and his wife, Cicely Boardman. The bust of Ralph Brideaoke is considered by many to be one of the most sensitive engraved by Jacques-Antoin. The reverse of the medal celebrates Brideoake's role in the restoration of the important medieval church of St. Mary's, Southampton, 1722. The diameter of the medal is 55 mm and the condition Extremely Fine.
