1586 - Assistance to the United Provinces SOLD

This bronze Elizabethan counter commemorates the assistance given by Queen Elizabeth to the Untied Provinces in 1586 (MI i 133/87). The obverse shows Elizabeth, crowned and seated, attended by the Earl of Leicester, who holds an open book on which are swords, presenting a sword to two deputies of the United Provinces. The legend reads 'Elizabeth is the nourisher of those who hunger after Him'. The reverse shows a sword, the point in clouds, bearing the name of Jehovah in Hebrew. The legend reads 'The word of God is sharper than any two-edge sword'. The diameter is 30mm and the condition better then very fine. This medal has been sold.
