1601 - Elizabeth I: Distress Relieved SOLD

This rare silver medal commemorates Elizabeth I, as the Preserver, making provision for the sick and wounded seamen and soldiers (MI i 177/177). Bohun said, 'Her ears were open to the complaints of the afflicted and of those that had been any way injured'. The obverse shows Elizabeth three-quarter bust crowned. The legend reads, 'With the help of God I sustain one with two'. The reverse shows the monogram of Elizabeth, crowned and dividing the date 1601. The legend reads, 'Preserver of the afflicted'. This is a nineteenth century, silver electrotype copy of the small medal. The diameter is 25mm and the condition Good Very Fine. This is a rare opportunity to obtains a copy of this superb medal. This medal has been sold.
