1691 - William III: Throne Established after the War in Ireland

This very rare silver medal by D. Koene commemorates the view held by many at the time that William III had established his throne after the war in Ireland (MI (ii) 45/232). It was struck upon William's return to Holland in 1691. The reverse shows four warriors of England, Scotland, Ireland and Holland fighting to defend an orange tree, which represents William, by land and sea. The legend CAUSA DIE EST reads "It is the cause of God". The legend on the edge REGNA MARI TERRAQUE TEGIT. TEGITURQUE VICISSIM reads "He protects the kingdoms by sea and land, and is, in turn, protected". The medal is oval 48mm x 34mm and in GFV condition.
