1604 - James I, Peace with Spain SOLD

This very rare silver, cast and chased medal by Nicholas Hilliard commemorates the peace with Spain following the Anglo-Spanish war in 1604 (MI 193/14). The Anglo-Spanish war lasted 19 years and saw English victories at Cadiz in 1587 and over the Spanish Armada in 1589. The medal shows the bust of James I with his hat crowned, a jewel under the brim, and falling lace collar. The legend reads, 'James by the Grace of God, King of Great Britain, France and Ireland'. The Reverse shows Peace with a palm branch and cornucopia opposite Religion, legend 'Hence Peace, plenty, and pure Religion'. The diameter is 34 mm and the condition is better than Very Fine. This medal has been sold.
