1708 - Battle of Oudenarde SOLD

This silver medal by John Croker commemorates the Battle of Oudenarde, Flanders, which took place on the 20th June 1708 (MI (ii) 322/148). The battle was part of the Spanish War of Succession. The French attacked Oudenarde, a place of great importance to both the French and the allies, but the allies under the command of the Duke of Marlborough out-manoevred and defeated them. Many were killed or injured and over 7,000 taken prisoner. The reverse of the medal shows two French captives bound to the base of a column surmounted by Victory and decorated with captured French standards. The diameter is 44mm and the condition Good Extremely Fine; the medal has a light tone. This medal has been sold.
