1742 - The Denier of the Council of Sixteen, Berne

This extremely rare silver medal by Jean Dassier is the Sechzehnerpfennig (The sixteenth Decimal Penny) or Denier of the Council of Sixteen, Berne, issues by their Excellences in 1742 (W. Eisler Vol II, 15, page 102). The obverse shows a bear wearing mail and holding a capped sword standing behind a shield which carries the Arms of Berne; the bear stands amongst a pile of arms. The obverse is signed I.D. (Jean Dassier). The reverse shows Religion holding a sword and sceptre with an Owl, representing wisdom, and a crane, representing vigilance, at her side. The reverse is signed I. DASSIER F. The legend in the exergue reads,'Senate and sixteen men of the Commonwealth Berne'. The diameter is 57 mm and the condition better than Extremely Fine. The medal has a light tone.
