1653 - Cromwell Protector SOLD

This cast silver medal by Thomas Simon commemorates the elevation of Oliver Cromwell to be Protector of England, Scotland and Ireland on the 16th December 1653 (MI i 409/45). The obverse carries the bust of Cromwell and the reverse a lion sejant supporting the shield of the Protectorate. The Latin legend on the reverse reads, "Peace is sought by war". The diameter is 38 mm and the condition Very Fine. The medal has a pleasing tone. This medal has been sold.
