1654 - The Commowaelth, Peace with Holland SOLD

This rare and large solid-silver medal by Jerian Pool commemorates the peace with Holland proclaimed during the Commonwealth in 1654 (MI i 416/53). The medal shows Neptune, with the shields of Commonwealth and Holland, advancing in his naval car; two Tritons attending upon him. The Latin legend on the obverse reads, "The anger of lovers is the renewal of friendship". The reverse carries a large inscription which reads, "In memory of the Peace, Union and Confederation, solemnly concluded at Westminster 15 April, between his Highness the Lord Protector of the Republic of England, Scotland and Ireland on the one part; and the High and Mighty Lords of the States General on the other part, the ratification of which were mutually exchanged in proper form 2nd of May and proclaimed the 27th of the same month, in the year 1654". The diameter is 60 mm and condition Ectremely Fine. Note the usual weakness on the reverse is a die fault. This medal has been sold
