1692 - The Battle of La Hogue by Hautsch

This rare silver medal by Georg Hautsch commemorates the Battle of La Hogue which lasted for six days between 19-24 May 1692 (MI ii 67/272). The combined English and Dutch fleets inflicted a server defeat on the French. The obverse shows William III, between two genii with palm branches, within a circular temple dedicated to the "Eternal memory". The reverse shows Victory and Fame supporting a tablet on which History and Time record the ships lost by the French during the battle. The Latin legend on the edge reads, "The gratitude of the world for the destruction of the French fleet by the English and Dutch". The diamter is 46 mm and the condition Extremely Fine.
