1697 - The Peace of Ryswisk by P. H. Muller

This rare silver medal by Philipp Heinrich Muller commemorates the Peace of Ryswick, settled by a treaty on the 20th September 1697 (Mi ii433/162). The nine year's war had pitted France against the Grand Alliance of England, Spain, the Holy Roman Empire and the United Provinces. The obverse shows Peace holding a trophy, composed of implements of husbandry, before Mars seated on a pile of arms, the Latin legend reads, "Thus returns beloved rest". The reverse shows the caduceus with an olive branch around it resting on a globe, the Latin legend reads, "It is sent down from the lofty Heavens". The Latin legend on the edge reads, "A single peace is better than innumerable triumphs". The diameter in 46 mm and the condition Good Extremely Fine. The medal has a light tone.
